Zachary got an eagle beanie baby from Fadia when he graduated, that he has not put down since. The poor thing is getting filthy because he tosses it around the house, uses it as a bat, sends it down the slide at the playground - into the sand, etc. Many times I have tried to suggest to him that "Baldy" might feel sad when he gets thrown on the floor, or whipped across the room. Zachary's response? "He's just a stuffed animal, Mom. He can't feel sad." Ok, as a person who has never been able to throw away a toy with a face because I think it will be sad to get thrown away, I appreciate that my son has a firm grasp on the fact that inanimate objects cannot have feelings. Even if it means that I am getting whipped in the head with an eagle three, or four times a day.
But yesterday when I was putting him down for his nap, he asked me to take off his sweatshirt. I did, and lay it on the rocking chair next to his bed. He immediately said, "Mom, can you please take it downstairs so that it won't attack me while I'm sleeping?"
I would have suggested that his eagle would protect him from any unprovoked sweatshirt attacks...but...you know...he's just a stuffed animal. So I just agreed and brought it downstairs.
